Beckman Scholars Program

The Beckman Research Scholarship is directed through the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and administered by the URC-Sciences. These awards are made to outstanding research students who are majoring in Chemistry/Biochemistry, Microbiology or Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology (MCDB), who have a strong commitment to research, and who are committed to completing an honors thesis or a comprehensive 199 project during their senior year. The award total, $18,200, is distributed over one academic year and two summers; academic year stipend = $4,600; summer stipends = $6,800 each, plus $2,800 for travel & research supplies.


  • Commitment to completing a departmental Honors Thesis or comprehensive research project in their final academic year
  • Commitment to conducting research full-time (minimum of 40 hrs/week for 10 weeks) during BOTH Summer 2017 and Summer 2018. Attending summer school is not allowed
  • Complete a research report due in July which includes research activities, mentorship, career and education plans
Students in the selected laboratories will be emailed an application. This applications will include:
  • Application form and academic plan
  • Updated "unofficial" transcript (do not use your DPR!)
  • SRP reports and 199 papers (if applicable)
  • 2-page statement describing your proposed research project
  • Letter of support from your faculty research mentor (to be sent by separate cover)
  • 1-page statement describing how receiving a Beckman award will help you achieve your career goals
  • Essay (no more than 500 words, see application for more info)
  • All program participants must complete necessary lab training courses prior to beginning work in research labs. The "Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts" class is required for all students, volunteers, and staff in laboratories. Please see the EH&S training schedule for class dates and enrollment instructions.


The deadline for receipt of all application materials and supporting documents, including a letter of recommendation from your faculty mentor will be TBD. Please speak with your faculty mentor about applying.

Incomplete and/or illegible applications will not be reviewed. Make sure that you have completed every item on the application legibly. All communication will be sent via e-mail.

It is the student's responsibility to ensure that the faculty letter is received by the deadline in Dr. Turner's office. Please be sure to contact your faculty mentor EARLY to ensure that the letter is submitted on time on your behalf.

Beckman Research Scholarship will be part of your overall financial aid package. This means that if you receive an award, the Financial Aid office will adjust your financial aid package to ensure that you do not exceed your financial aid eligibility. If such an adjustment is made, loans and work-study award are reduced first, prior to grant or other scholarship reductions.
